Home of the 2011 & 2012 SA Open Championship!
The Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate hosted the 2011 and 2012 SA Open Championship tournaments!
In 2010 Serengeti was selected as the home base for the New Zealand soccer team during the 2010 Soccer World Cup and then was selected as the preferred host to stage the premier event on the Sunshine Tour, the 101st SA Open in 2011 and 102nd SA Open in 2012. This was a great honour, especially for a new golf course of just three years. We believe that a number of factors contributed towards this achievement. Our convenient location and close proximity to OR Tambo, Pretoria and Johannesburg being one of them.
The quality and design of the Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course as well as the diversity and scale of our Club house facility were no doubt contributing factors.
Other achievements including “Best New Golf Course for 2010” by Golf Digest and a five star service award from Complete Golfer, both received in a space of only 18 months from opening, have ranked Serengeti Golf Club to be one of the best in the Country.
From conception stage when developers Leon and Gideon van der Vyver first approached Jack Nicklaus, they expressed that one of their objectives was to host an international championship tournament. Although primarily an estate course, it was designed with characteristics of a stadium course.
The course was constructed in accordance with USGA specifications and the sunken design of the course with its wide corridors is ideal for tournament purposes, providing optimal spectator value on almost every hole. Weather shelters and toilet facilities are strategically situated on the course. An engineer designed drainage system allows play to continue without too much delay, after a typical Highveld storm.
Serengeti Golf Club is one of few 27 hole courses in Gauteng, another advantage for a tournament venue. The course has been designed as a strategic and technical master piece that will test today’s best players. One of the unique features on the course is the par five, 8th hole with its island green.
The cool season grassed playing areas provide a wonderful spectacle, especially in the starkness of the Highveld winter. Cool season grasses means green vistas all year round, and Serengeti is one of the first courses with these grasses in Gauteng.
The Serengeti Golf Club House is an impressive 6500 sm2 building. It is not only aesthetically appealing but also very functional with all the amenities one would expect in such a world-class environment. These facilities include restaurants and lounges, an impressive conferencing venue, fitness center and Golf Academy offering state of the art AV technology and equipment.
“We pride ourselves as being a world class establishment, completely geared towards offering our guests world class service and an all-round five star experience and we believe that Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate provides an ideal platform to stage the SA Open Golf Championship event for 2011 and 2012”, says Serengeti C.E.O. and Developer, Leon van der Vyver.
